We’ve used our Training Navigator to pinpoint the best speciality training hospitals for psychiatry in the UK. This uses over 80 000 data points from the GMC survey to give each placement in a hospital a 5 star ranking. Rotations with 5 stars scored in the top 20% of jobs of that speciality and grade. Those in the bottom 20% will receive one star. This gives you an at-a-glance comparison of rotations. You can use it to research rotations before you apply to them, read our guide for how to use the TN for more help.
Our top rated hospitals are listed below. These are the hospitals with the highest ratings across the board for general psychiatry at core level.
- Leverndale is the only hospital with 5 stars in every category
At the top of our list is Leverndale Hospital on the outskirts of Glasgow. This is the only hospital with 5 stars in every category. It is rated 6th for overall satisfaction in the country and 2nd for having a supportive environment. St George’s Hospital runs a close 2nd in our Top Picks. It has the highest national rating for clinical supervision and is rated 3rd for having a supportive environment.
- Hospitals in South London dominate the rest of our top picks
Psychiatry is one of the few speciality training programmes that scores highly in London. The Tamworth Road Resource Centre comes in the top 10 across the country for adequate experience, supportive environment and overall satisfaction. Queen Mary’s has good ratings across all categories and the 2nd highest national rating for clinical support. Tolworth came joint 2nd for overall satisfaction. However, none of these hospitals have high ratings for workload.
Another hospital that narrowly missed out on our top picks is the Lambeth Hospital. Here’s what one Messly doctor had to say about their experience:
- The hospitals with the highest satisfaction have higher levels of workload
The last two hospitals in our ratings exemplify this trend, with Harplands and Lanchester rated 1st and joint 2nd for overall satisfaction respectively. However, they have much lower ratings for workload. In fact none of the hospitals in the top 10 for overall satisfaction were also in the top 10 for workload which suggests that trainees find the most rewarding jobs are also some of the busiest.
